MICROARRAYS

Microarrays are chiplike devices that spot genetic mutations aka single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) instead of reading the DNA sequence letter by letter. Microarrays are fast and effective in screening for SNPs. Many SNPs have been linked to certain diseases and the microarrays can be used to detect any of these diseases.

On the left is a photograph of a microarray chip that is used for analyzing specific sequences of DNA. This chip typically costs around $1,000. (text 6)
